Chowder Bowl Classic History

History

In 1999 the Western Mass Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame discussed the possibility of having an All-Star game for graduating seniors. All-Star attempts to have games before never lasted more than a couple of years. The coaches had ways to organize the teams, coaching staffs, equipment, practice and game sites, but didn’t have the resources or manpower to handle publicity, game management, ticket sales and other organizational needs.

Longtime Chapter member Ron Abdow met with football foundation president Alex Rotsko and Shrine representative Tony Koss. Koss liked the idea and brought it to the Melha Shriners. The original plan was to set up a game with All-Stars from Western and CentralMass playing a team from Connecticut but Connecticut teams were committed to an All-Star game with Rhode Island and the present West vs.Central format was selected.

The first Chowder Bowl was played in 2001, but not without incident. The game ended in a 0-0 tie after severe thunder and lightning storms knocked out the electricity and ended the game early. Despite the weather, the first game was a success. As we celebrate the game’s 11th anniversary this year, it is safe to say the Chowder Bowl is here to stay.

Congratulations to 2004 Shrine Chowder Bowl Classis alumnus:

Ron Brace 2009 2nd round pick of the New England Patriots. Best Wishes Ron!  read more
