Western Mass Player Selection Process
The Shrine Chowder Bowl is a joint effort between the Melha Shriners of Springfield and the Western Mass Chapter of The National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame. The Football Foundation has formed a committee of present and past high school football coaches to oversee the selection of the players, coaches, cheerleaders and band.

The player selection process begins in November at the end of the season football coaches meeting. At this meeting each coach is given a nomination form. Forms are mailed to coaches not in attendance. The form instructs them to nominate up to five seniors. They are asked to include player position and any special talent such as long snapper, kick returner, etc. Each coach is also asked to list the top five senior players his team has competed against. The roster is limited to fifty players. The coaches therefore are informed that not all players nominated will be selected.
The forms are returned to the committee in early December and a meeting is scheduled. The meeting is open to all high school coaches. Every effort is made to include at least one coach from each league.
Factors considered and discussed in the selection of the players are coach's input, all league selections, positions, and special talents. The team is selected before the newspaper all-stars are announced, so this has no bearing on the selections.
The final roster is given to the Shriners, who will then contact the players selected.
Selection Process For Western Massachusetts Head Coaches
The head coach is selected on a rotating basis of league superbowl participants in that year. The rotation is as follows: Div III, (Intercounty) Div I, (AA) Div II A, (Suburban) Div lA, (AA) Div II, (Berkshires) Div lilA, (Tricounty). The head coach must have a minimum of three years experience as a head coach and if selected cannot return as a head coach within a three year period.
If the head coach of the superbowl team, from the league in rotation that year, meets the requirements he is contacted and asked if he would like to participate. If he doesn't meet the requirements or declines to participate, the committee goes to the next league superbowl participant in rotation. Should all coaches decline the offer, the decision goes back to the committee. If the head coach accepts, he is free to choose his staff. The entire coaching staff however is limited to ten.
The cheerleaders and band are also selected on a rotating basis. There is a complete list of schools, in no particular order that is used. We attempt to contact schools each year that have not yet been represented.
The mission of The National Football Foundation is not only to provide a safe, enjoyable and emorable experience for all participants, but to promote sportsmanship, encourage teamwork, develop friendships and create an atmosphere of mutual respect. We hope that it becomes a goal of every high school player to be a participant.
Central Massachusetts Player Selection Process

Players whose name appears multiple times on the nomination forms under the section of opposing player nominations.
The Central Mass Chowder Bowl Committee (Jerry Pastner, Jeff Cormier, Mike Ross) along with Jim Pignataro (President of the Joseph R. Mewhiney Chapter) and the Head Coaches selected to coach in the Chowder Bowl are all part of the player selection process.
This committee believes in choosing the best players from Central Massachusetts to participate in the Chowder Bowl. There is no consideration given to selecting at least one player from each team in Central Massachusetts. We do try to be fair in selecting players from all six divisions.
Selection Process For Central Massachusetts Head Coaches
